One area that's been interesting me lately is medicinal herbs. They were used for thousands of years, discarded in the recent past, and are now coming back to merge with our new knowledge and awareness.
They're one of those links to our natural ecosystem that's been overlooked in a lot of modern cultures. I think they play a huge role in overall long-term health, and I'm excited to learn more about them.
There are some herbs that are good specifically for a detox diet plan. They can support the body’s systems overall, and some stimulate cleansing in certain areas of the body.
These are some of the most effective herbs for a detox diet plan, and their specific actions:
Mixing a few of these herbs into a formula can combine their effects for a bigger overall impact. A couple of mixes for a detox diet plan would be:
Cayenne in particular magnifies the effect of all other herbs. Ask a herbalist for specific recommendations, or buy a pre-mixed herbal product. There are some herbal products specifically for a detox diet plan. Check the ingredients to see which herbs are included, and to make sure there aren’t any additives.
To prepare whole herbs, one of the most effective ways is to make a decoction, which is where you boil them (15-30 min for most herbs) and then let them steep for another 30 min. You can make a big batch, keep it in the fridge, and then drink it over a few days. You can also buy herbs ground and put into capsules, or made into a liquid extract that you can add to water or juice.
What are your thoughts on herbal remedies - in general, or specifically to do with a detox diet plan? Have you used them, and what did they do for you?

Hey guys, this is Heather from healthyeatingstartshere.com. Today, we are going to talk a little bit about herbs. I’ve been getting into herbal info lately and getting really excited with the potential with medicinal herbs.
The renews historically for a very-very long time, they kind of fell out with the advance of scientific medicine and they are starting to comeback, and it’s a really interesting merging of an ancient kind of wisdom with a new kind of scientific take on the same thing.
Its one way that I feel like it’s a link back to our natural eco system and I think it is a really important part of long term health.
Now in terms of detoxing, which is I’ve been talking about on my blog all month over at healthyeatingstartshere.com. Medicinal herbs can play really important role in supporting your over all health as well as targeting specific systems in your body for stimulating them for cleansing, so they can be really interesting part of a detox and you can pick specific ones base on what kind of a detox you want to do.
I have a long list of different medicinal herbs on the blog today, so go over at healthyeatingstarthere.com check that out. I’ve got couple to tell you about in particular. I’ve got a burdock root, which is cleansing to the blood as well as the kidneys. Cascara sagrata is a pretty common one that use as laxative but it also helps to just cleans your colon and make it healthier.
Cayenne is a master cleanses, the fast version and cayenne is really useful for cleansing your blood and it also cleanses you lymphatic system. So, it’s a good one to include in any kind of cleansing diet. And what it does is it helps to eliminate fluids from your body, and you can notice that particularly if you get sweats from cayenne.
And garlic is one that we use fairly often, but it is really powerful at cleaning the blood and basically all of your system but specifically the blood. If you want to get some super cleansing going on, put more on garlic in your food, although it should be raw food and we using it for cleansing.
Ginger is one that we use quite so often. I tried to use it in my cooking as often as possible, because I think its one that sometimes gets over looked but it can help stimulate your circulation and also stimulate some sweating and it helps stimulate digestive system.
If you’ve heard of ginger being use for motion sickness that kind of thing, but it’s also helps to cleanse the kidneys which is a bit of a harder one to cleanse and they can get some build up.
A little bit more of interesting one would be licorice root, which helps fluid elimination, it does also work as the laxative it can soothe the stomach and the reason I say it interesting is because it can help stimulate your adrenal glands.
So many problems in our society right now are to deal with stress. And stress would really affect the glands system, in a particular in the adrenals. So if your doing a cleanse and trying to reduce your stress load, licorice root is really good one to include and look for it in your local herbs store.
It’s one of the more common ones, so hopefully you can find it. I found that on my grocery store, they sell bulk herbs so I'm very lucky that way.
Like I said there are more herbs listed on this site if you want to go check out my blog, you’ll find a whole list of herbs there. You can also make or buy a mixed of herbs, so there are some products made with herbal ingredients to enhance cleansing a certain system, so colon and liver cleanse, cleans of kidney and some stuff like that.
You can make some mixes your self as well. And the reason mixing herbs are good because they work in energetically. So, some herbs will enhance the effect of another so. You’ve actually winds up is the mixed is more active than each herb on each own. Cayenne is one example of an herb that really enhances the effect any other herb that its mixed with.
So, take a look for those if you do buy premixed product, just take a look of the ingredients make sure there’s now preservative or chemicals or if you want to avoid gelatin - the capsules are often made from gelatin you can get vegetables silos capsules instead.
So I want to know what your thoughts are on herbs today. How you feel about them if you tried them if they’ve been successful. Let me know leave me a comment and be sure to check out the blog at healthyeatingstartshere.com for more info on detoxing and cleansing.
